“Plan Ahead the signs say. Think. Pray. But what the hell good does it do? You can worry and plan and pray to your heart’s content, but then one day you walk around a corner and something happens—your life changes completely you see something, or hear something, or you meet a stranger, and something inside you shifts gears, or changes directions, and there’s nothing you can do about it. All that thinking and planning and praying goes merrily down the drain.” For Ron Bartlett, that change began one night in 1969, at The Talisman Bar in Hollywood, California, when he met an “S” named Colin.

Dirk Vanden offers a short introduction to the history of this novel, first published under a different title in 1969, as well as a prologue, which offers an entry to the over-riding theme of the plot, similar to the familiar sentiment expressed in the Peanuts© strip many years ago by Charlie Brown:"What did I come this way for?" Indeed, this feeling of being lost, alone, alienated from the world, is perhaps the most common theme in modern Western literature, certainly the most common theme in serious Gay literature. There is more than existential philosophy hidden in the thoughts and words of the main characters in this work, Ron and Colin - there is the sex between them which complements their emotions. Ron feels his life is a failure because he hasn't been successful staying in a meaningful relationship longer than three years. Colin claims that he isn't a "candidate" to become Ron's lover and says he's no longer satisfied with "plain vanilla sex" but needs the role-playing as an "S" offered by S&M activities. But Ron doesn't know which category he might belong to, since he's avoided involvement in this scene in the past. In an unplanned escapade, Ron accepts an invitation from a young man, Pat, to come home with him. When they arrive at the isolated house, Ron follows Pat down to a cellar room, illuminated by strange red lighting, and follows Pat's instructions to remove jeans and don a leather costume on his upper body: nothing but a mask, a belt and a vest. Next, Ron must strap Pat, by wrists and ankles, into a metal frame and beat him with the belt....until Kirk, Pat's lover and Master, arrives, forces Ron to intensify Pat's painful humiliation and finally orders Ron to leave. Driving home, Ron thinks: "I felt cold and naked - raw, ugly... What kind of emotional desperation would be necessary [for] a relationship like theirs?" Ron's introspection into what had passed results in his feeling that it didn't seem real, but detached and distant from him. He has other events and men to experience, and he must learn why Colin prefers role-playing to "plain vanilla sex." So Ron does what Colin wants him to do: attend an S&M "party" with Colin. The party would do Caligula proud as a display of physical and emotional sexual extremism. But Ron survives, thanks to his Master.

[Vanden's fans should look for the republication of his early "All Trilogy" appearing soon: "I Want It All," around July 1, 2011; "All the Way," around August 1; "All Is Well," September 1; and all three in one volume, "All Together," + a movie script, October 1. Note: all dates are tentative, dependent upon the publisher.
