Hans Brinker, or the Silver Skates was written by Mary Mapes Dodge in 1865. It is the story of a Dutch boy and his family and friends as they strive to overcome economic and personal hardships in early 19th Century Netherlands. The novel’s title refers to the silver skates to be awarded to winner of the ice-skating race Hans is determined to enter.

This eBook edition is illustrated by French illustrator Théophile Schuler (1821-1878). His etchings were used to illustrate the 1899 edition.

Mary Mapes Dodge was born in 1831 in New York City. In 1859, after the death of her husband she started writing and editing two magazines “Working Farmer” and the “United States Journal”. She published a collection of short stories “The Irvington Stories” in 1864. A year later, she completed Hans Brinker, or the Silver Skates which became an instant bestseller. She died in 1905.

This is a kid's book and and older one at that. It has been a part of my childhood and as a kid, i loved it. I re-read it and the story was still interesting. The idea of the closed head injured father and his recovery in our generation with our medical knowledge is very hard to believe, but it can be put in context and seen as such. It is rather like the miracle cure for a closed head injury by "trephining" found in one of the Anne of Green Gables books ( I think it was Anne's House of Dreams). Altogether, it is still a good child's book and all the activities they managed to do during the book, and the complete lack of parental over-supervision in it, will still appeal to kids. There is also a sense of kindness and morality in the book that is a relief from the "enemy'-oriented stories of today.

Hans Brinker or the Silver Skates Illustrated Unique Classics edition by Mary Mapes Dodge Théophile Schuler Unique Classics Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I've always wanted to read this book when I was younger. I am much older now and enjoyed reading it. A very good read if I say so myself. Well written, Ms. Dodge.
I last read this book while in sixth grade. I loved the story then and still enjoyed this 're-read. I had forgotten several of the subplots but have always loved old novels that ties everything up in the end.
A children's classic, from Holland, especially great bed-time reading for young children (say 6 - 12) to give them a feel for Dutch cultural heritage.
This story is absolutely one of the most entertaining stories I've ever read. It gives you a "look" a Holland in the past while captivating you with the fun story of 5 friends skating from (either Haarlem or Leyden) to Amsterdam. It is a fun adventure with surprises along the way.
I read this with my sons and now send it to my grandsons. Even if the boy is 12, it makes a better read aloud with lots of points for discussion.
